Is it true that compulsory public education was the single greatest force for democracy?

No, a strong military is. education is great, but if you can't defend your country from being invaded and taken over, who cares about education. Is it true that compulsory public education was the single greatest force for democracy?
Yes, because before this, only the rich and powerful were educated. The poor white and Minorities were not allowed to be educated. The founding fathers knew educating the masses was a guarantee that democracy would live. However, being human, and subject to error, they ignore, or overlooked the education of the minorities, until well after the civil war.Is it true that compulsory public education was the single greatest force for democracy?
No.

The will to defend is the single greatest force of any system of government.

If you are referencing the USA, then you should remember that we are a Republic, not a Democracy. That little bit of important information is apparently glossed over.
seeing that their was no compulsory public education at the beginning of our nations history, or in athens I would say definitely not.
It would be if they taught anything of any real value or consequence, but they don't!
