Education - Primarily a literate society
A free press is extremely important - I don't think any right wing nut can say the US doesn't have a free press, just look at Rush Lintball and The FOX Biased News Network.
The Bible - Some say it brought about democracy, which also goes with a literate public.
The Printing Press - Can't have a bible or a literate public without it. Only the nobles had books until the printing press came along.
